Guided Walks Accessible by Public Transport

It’s not always possible to find hill walking routes which can be easily reached by bus or train, but they do exist and I’ve made sure that several of the guided walks I’m offering in 2025 are accessible for those who rely on, or prefer to use, public transport.

I’ve done my best to coincide the timings of the walks to fit in with the arrival and departure time, but please let me know if something doesn’t work for you. Just get in touch and I’m very happy to see if the start/end time can be shifted a bit. Get in touch here: https://skylarkguiding.co.uk/guided-walks-in-the-scottish-highlands/

And please don’t rely on the information I’ve provided, and make sure to double check the times of the buses/trains and book in advance.

  • Evening Hike: Above the Clyde. Wednesday 30th April, 6.30pm to 9.30pm. This walk starts from Overtoun House above Dumbarton. This is a 35 minute walk (or I can pick you up) from the bus stop in Milton (a walk up a quiet road) which is served by the 1 and 1A bus from Buchanan bus station (every 30 minutes). This service runs until 11.30pm.
  • Mountain Day: Beinn a’ Ghlò (3 Munros), Tuesday 20th May. This walk starts near Blair Atholl which can be accesses by direct train from Inverness, Perth, Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh, and Citylink bus. I can pick up from the train or bus station.
  • Isle of Arran Camping weekend, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June. The ferry to Arran will be operating from Ardrossan (it’s operating from Troon until late April/early May). Ardrossan can be reached by train from Glasgow Central. The plan for this weekend is to meet in Glasgow Central or Ardrossan and travel together.
  • No Rush Hike: The Cobbler, Tuesday 24th June. The start of the walk is served by a Citylink bus from Glasgow which arrives at 09.32, returning 17.21. It’s also possible to walk (45 mins) or cycle (15 mins) from the nearest train station (Arrochar and Tarbet).
  • No Rush Hike: Isle of Arran, Friday 4th July. As with the Arran camping weekend above, this No Rush Hike has been planned around the ferry timetable from Ardrossan to Brodick. Ardrossan is reached by train from Glasgow Central (45 minutes).
  • Mountain Day: Beinn a’ Bheithir via Schoolhouse Ridge (2 Munros), Saturday 12th July. This walk starts in Ballachulish which is reached by Citylink bus from Glasgow or Fort William.
  • Mountain Day: Isle of Arran Traverse, Tuesday 19th August. As with the camping weekend and No Rush Hike above, this Mountain Day has been planned around the ferry timetable from Ardrossan to Brodick. Ardrossan is reached by train from Glasgow Central (45 minutes).
  • Walking Weekend: Mountains from Glen Nevis, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September. Glen Nevis is accessible by bus from Fort William (Shiel buses, hourly service) which itself is reached by train or Citylink bus from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, and the Isle of Skye.
  • No Rush Hike: Ben Vrackie, Sunday 5th October. Pitlochry Train Station is a 25 minute walk from the start of the walk, served by trains between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Citylink buses also stop in Pitlochry.

Please get in touch if you have questions about any of the walks or about getting there by bus or train (or if you’d like to ask about a lift; I often have to drive).
