A one day navigation course in Mugdock Country Park for a group of up to six women who want to grow their confidence using maps and compass for navigating in the countryside, on paths and tracks.
There is be a short indoor session first introducing different kinds of maps, identifying map symbols, and understanding contour lines.
We then spend the rest of the day outdoors to plan and implement simple routes.

You’ll learn how to:
– orientate the map using a compass,
– plan and implement simple routes,
– measure distance on the map and on the ground
– relate prominent landforms such as large hills and glens to the map

Who is this for?
This day is suitable for those who have not used maps and compasses before.
What you need:
Please dress appropriately for a day outdoors. We won’t be moving very fast and will be standing around a fair amount so please wrap up warm.
You need a compass but the maps are provided. I you don’t have a compass and want to buy one I recommend the SILVA Expedition 4 compass. If you don’t want to buy one, you can borrow one on the day (please let me know when booking).
Please also bring a pen and notebook for taking notes.
