Navigation Skills Level 2

A one day navigation course in the Kilsyth Hills for a group of up to six women who want to grow their confidence using maps and compass to plan and follow routes in the countryside with some short sections away from paths and tracks.

There will be a short indoor session first to review foundational skills: setting (aka orientating) the map; measuring distance on maps and estimating how long it will take to walk that distance on the ground; and how to relate prominent landforms such as large hills and valleys to the corresponding information on the map.

We then spend the rest of the day outdoors to plan and implement simple routes.

2024 dates:

Saturday 2nd March, Monday 5th August, Sunday 3rd November. All 9.30am to 5pm. (for Level 1 course please click here)

You’ll learn how to:

– use a compass to: follow a bearing; aim off; and check the direction of handrails

– use pacing to measure distance on the ground

– relate small hills and valley and other landforms to the map

– plan and implement a navigational strategy

Navigation course for women

Who is this for?

This day is suitable for those who have attended the Level 1 course or another introductory course or who are confident identifying features on maps (such as rivers, paths, fences, large hills and valleys).  If you’re not sure please get in touch or have a  look at what is covered in the Level 1 course: https://skylarkguiding.co.uk/navigation-course-for-beginners/

What you need:

Please dress for a day outdoors in the hills (waterproofs, walking boots, gloves, hat, extra layers). We won’t be moving very fast and will be standing around a fair amount so please wrap up warm. Please bring lunch and water and/or a hot drink in a flask.

You need a compass but the maps are provided.  I you don’t have a compass and want to buy one I recommend the SILVA Expedition 4 compass. If you don’t want to buy one, you can borrow one on the day (please let me know when booking).
