No Rush Hikes vs Mountain Days

Wondering if a No Rush Hike or a Mountain Day is right for you? Here are some key differences.

Pace:

▪️ On No Rush Hikes we are, er, in no rush. The pace is determined by whoever turns up and we go at a pace which is comfortable for the slowest person.

▪️ On Mountain Days, the pace is still the one which is comfortable for the slowest person, but there is an expectation that those who sign up are comfortable on uneven terrain, with going uphill with fewer breaks, and with walking at around 3-4km/hour.

It’s never a race and and I encourage a supportive and inclusive group ethos every time.

Length:

▪️ No Rush Hikes tend to cover shorter distances and allow for more time to cover that distance.

▪️ Mountain Days are longer routes, with more ascent

Some routes are suitable for No Rush Hikes and Mountain Days, we just allow more time when it’s a No Rush Hike.

Terrain:

▪️ No Rush Hikes don’t involve any scrambling or very steep ground, and usually use good paths (although some can still be muddy and uneven).

▪️ Mountain Days might include some easy scrambling (but many don’t) and some sections of rougher paths.

I always provide lots of info about what to expect but please ask me if you want more or if anything is unclear.

Goals:

▪️ Because the pace on No Rush Hikes is determined by whoever turns up (rather than it being dictated by the need to reach a summit) we won’t necessarily reach a summit.

▪️ That’s not to say that on a Mountain Day we will reach a summit at any costs, but Mountain Days are more for those with a goal in mind.

Remember that all days in the mountains need to be flexible. A key skills for hillwalkers is being able to adapt plans depending on weather, terrain, and our physical abilities on any given day.

Turning back at the right time is just as much of an achievement as reaching a summit.
